Below, we provide answers to the most frequently asked questions and address concerns related to timber frame home technology. The answers are based on facts and the experience of Timber Moon, a company specializing in the construction of modern, year-round timber homes.
Is structural timber durable?
Answer: Yes – provided it is properly selected and prepared. At Timber Moon, we build exclusively with certified C24-grade structural timber – a material with verified parameters, tested for compressive, bending, and tensile strength. Each element is kiln-dried and planed on four sides – this ensures the timber has low moisture content, is dimensionally stable, and resistant to cracks and warping. Such a structure not only maintains rigidity but also possesses natural flexibility – allowing it to better withstand stresses, micro-vibrations, and temperature changes. Thanks to high-quality materials and professional craftsmanship, Timber Moon homes are durable and solid – designed to serve for many years.
Is a timber frame home quiet?
Answer: Yes – a well-designed timber frame home can be as quiet as a traditional masonry home. At Timber Moon, we place great importance on daily acoustic comfort. The key lies in the proper construction of partitions: we tightly fill the spaces between structural elements with sound-absorbing material – most often high-quality rock wool (basalt) or wood wool, which perfectly dampen external sounds and household noises (e.g., conversations or TV sound).
Additionally, in our projects, we apply maximum soundproofing to the building by using rock wool (basalt) or wood wool in the ceiling and partition walls, which significantly reduces sound transmission between rooms. Steico boards in external walls and roof construction not only provide additional acoustic insulation but also improve the thermal parameters of the building. The entire system is complemented by triple-glazed window joinery with warm installation, which effectively reduces external noise and supports the energy efficiency of the home. Thanks to this, our clients can enjoy true peace and quiet – regardless of what is happening outside.
How do you protect the house from pests (e.g., rodents, insects)?
Answer: Protecting the home from pests begins already at the stage of material selection and construction. At Timber Moon, we place immense importance on this. The structural timber we use is kiln-dried and impregnated – the high-temperature drying process eliminates any insect larvae and also reduces the timber’s moisture content, making it an unattractive environment for insects (pests do not attack dry, healthy timber).
As for rodents (mice, rats), the proper construction and finishing of the house are crucial to prevent these animals from entering. Our homes are built very tightly sealed – all connections and potential openings are carefully insulated and sealed. Good sealing ensures that rodents will not find an easy way inside. Additionally, every ventilation gap in the structure (e.g., in a wooden facade) is secured with a dense metal mesh, which acts as a barrier for insects and simultaneously prevents larger pests from entering. Such a steel mesh is permanently installed during the construction phase of the house – thanks to this, even small rodents are unable to get inside.
Thanks to the combination of impregnated materials and structural solutions, clients do not have to worry about woodworms in the walls or mice running in the attic. Of course, as in any rural home, it is advisable to maintain general hygiene (e.g., not leaving easily accessible food for rodents, using window screens, etc.), but the wooden structural elements themselves are well protected against pests due to the quality of the material and our safeguards.
